Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman is born on 29 April 1882 in Leens, in the province of Groningen. He is the second of three sons of a veterinarian, Klaas Jacob Werkman (1847-1891), and Grietien Alingh Louwes (1850-1931). His elder brother is Pieter Jacob (1880-1963) and his younger brother Martinus Hendrikus (1884-1953).

1893
The Werkman family moves to Assen, yet settles in Groningen a year later.

1894
The move to Groningen. One of the family’s addresses is Korreweg 28A, across from the sports grounds ‘Noordersportterrein’, where horseraces are held. Werkman’s love of horses and equestrian sports shall go on to play a major role in his life and art. The Werkman brothers are a creative lot and make their own toys: paper soldiers and toy stables, with horses sawn from wood. They also have a toy printing press with which they print little books.

1896
Werkman attends the first year of the ‘Rijks-HBS’, the Dutch state secondary school, where he joins the recital club, Demosthenes. He does comical songs and plays the clarinet and violin.

Werkman’s school report card, from the end of his third year at the ‘Rijks-HBS’, the state secondary school, in Groningen. Despite full marks, a 10, for Dutch, the verdict is harsh; he is kept down a class: ‘zitten’.
